Causal Arguments: The 3 Weaken Traps

Chapter 1

The Trap of Diagramming Causality

You, you see a conditional statement like, if a person eats sugar, then they get cavities, and your brain immediately draws an arrow from sugar to cavities. But then, then the test gives you, sugar causes cavities, and students try to draw that exact same arrow. And, and that right there is where the score bleeds out.

Yeah, because, um, sugar causing cavities isn't a logical rule, right? It's a physical mechanism in the real world.

Adrian Calloway

Exactly. Conditional logic is about guaranteed conditions. A cause is just a push. It's an event that brings about another event. When you force a causal claim into a conditional box with arrows, you lose the ability to analyze the actual gap in the argument.

Nora Ashford

Right, and and where this gets really tricky, or at least where I used to get totally tripped up when I started studying, is where the causal statement actually sits in the argument. Like, is it in a premise, or is it in the conclusion?

Adrian Calloway

That distinction is everything. If the premise says, sugar causes cavities, and then builds on that, you have to accept that premise as a given fact. You don't get to debate whether sugar actually rots teeth.

But if the author looks at a study showing that kids who eat candy have more cavities, and then concludes, therefore, sugar causes cavities, now you're in Correlation to Causation land.

Adrian Calloway

Right. Now it's a conclusion based on a mere pattern. In my litigator days, I treated premises like stipulated facts from the judge, and conclusions like unvetted witness testimony. You never cross examine the judge's stipulations, but that witness statement? That's where you hunt for the hole.

Nora Ashford

That witness is reaching. And, and if we look at sufficiency versus causation, that's another place where the arrow diagram fails completely. Because knowing sugar causes cavities doesn't mean sugar is sufficient to guarantee you'll get a cavity every single time. You might brush your teeth right away.

Adrian Calloway

Or have indestructible enamel.

Nora Ashford

Exactly. And it definitely doesn't mean if you have a cavity, you must have eaten sugar. It could be genetics or not flossing. So the contrapositive, the whole if no cavity, then no sugar thing, completely falls apart.

Adrian Calloway

It breaks down entirely because causation is not logical necessity. A cause can be weak, it can be partial, it can be one of ten factors. Conditional logic demands absolute strictness. Treat them as two entirely different beasts, or the test will eat you alive.

Chapter 2

The Three Way Causal Attack Map

So, okay, once you stop drawing arrows and realize you're dealing with a causal argument, how do you actually tear it down on a Weaken question? Because sometimes the test doesn't even use obvious words like caused or produced.

Adrian Calloway

It can be subtle. They'll just present an explanation for a phenomenon. Say a researcher notices a local bar is packed every Tuesday night, and they conclude, the bar must be crowded because their cocktails are delicious.

Nora Ashford

Right, there's no explicit cause word there, but delicious drinks is being offered as the single reason for the crowding.

Adrian Calloway

Precisely. And whenever an author picks one explanation for a pattern, they're implicitly assuming no other explanation exists. That's their vulnerability. Whenever I see that, I run what I call a deposition check with three specific attack lines.

Nora Ashford

The three competing storylines. This was, honestly, the absolute turning point for me when I was trying to crack the 170s. I stopped drawing arrows on Weaken questions and just ran these three scenarios in my head.

Adrian Calloway

Let me walk through them. Storyline one is reverse causality. Did the crowding cause the delicious drinks? Maybe the bar gets so much revenue on Tuesdays that they can afford fresh juice and top shelf liquor just for that night.

Nora Ashford

Cause and effect flipped around. And storyline two is the third variable, right? Something else causing both.

Adrian Calloway

Exactly. Factor C. A massive tech company opened an office next door and gives all its employees free drink coupons on Tuesday evenings. The coupons drive both the crowd and the heavy cocktail orders.

Nora Ashford

And then storyline three is just a completely independent alternative cause. Maybe the drinks are actually terrible, but the bar sells one dollar sliders on Tuesdays or has a wildly popular live band.

Adrian Calloway

That's it. One dollar sliders or a live music act explain the crowd without delicious cocktails ever entering the equation. Reverse cause, third variable, or alternative cause. Every single Weaken answer choice on a causal question fits into one of those three buckets.

Nora Ashford

And what changed everything for me on test day was realizing that you don't attack the premise. You don't argue with the fact that the bar is crowded on Tuesdays. The premise is solid. You're attacking the author's arrogant belief that their explanation has a monopoly on the truth.

They saw a correlation and pretended it was a closed case. Your job is just to open the door and point to the one dollar sliders.

Point to the sliders every time.

Sounds good.
